Decolonization As Care
Uzma Z. Rizvi
'Once we recognize that we are placed in various systems in ways to keep us moving in place, we stop and then slowly realign our ways of experience, our praxis experiences radical change, one in which we might recognize decolonization as care.'
What am I mending?
Relationship with myself (specifically how education has influenced this).
I would like to do this by learning how I got certain insecurities, and coming to terms with them by taking a moment to acknowledge them.
How am I mending?
As an artist / designer, it is easier for me to understand things by visualizing them. This is why I think it would be effective to characterise / give a place to each of the insecurities - making them real as it were. Instead of physically mending an object, this project will be more of a mindful exercise that will hopefully lead me to come to some realisations about myself along the way.
Link to Major?
To link practice with theory, I have chosen to focus on the topic of education, therefore it only seemed logical to build a school. The school will be made up out of several classrooms; each one representing an insecurity that I would like to mend. In each of the classrooms I will stick encouraging words on the walls, meaning that when i'm feeling insecure at any time, I can go to the classroom and teach myself how to feel more confident.
All the insecurities I have while working mean I have constant thoughts flowing through my mind - making my way of working chaotic. I wanted to emulate this in the video, and when looking back at myself it made me realize that this is possibly not the best way of working. This way the video was also a part of the mending process.

I learned about this mending process of reflection in the article 'Decolonisation as Care.' A quote I thought was really interesting was - 'Once we allow our work to breathe, to reflect, to sense difference, it transforms structures around it or structures created through it.' Ironically it seemed too relevant not to use, as I was (and often) make literal structures (lol)

My Own Letter:
To my insecure self. This letter will be there for me to read and remind myself of my good qualities and that its ok to slow down once in a while.
